I would like to welcome you to the Department of Asian and Policy Studies at the Education University of Hong Kong. Your interest in our program is of high importance to us.
I often receive questions from prospective students about why they should study public policy. Here is one example. Kris, in these crazy times, why should I study public policy?
Prospective student, these are crazy times indeed. Allow me to paint a picture of what a public policy education looks like. It offers you not only the practical skill-set to conduct rigorous quantitative analysis for policy issues, but the broader interdisciplinary perspective to make sense of highly complex policy problems at all scales, from your hometown all the way up to global governance.
Upon successful completion of our program, you will be able to Understand the principles, theories and practice of policy sciences and public sector management; apply substantive knowledge of techniques, institutions and processes in public policy and management; and finally, bring fresh perspectives to the pursuit of human development and dignity, by upholding moral values and integrity. I argue that the world needs more of this type of leadership at the current time.
I look forward to seeing you on campus soon. Thank you for your interest, and be well.
