State-society interactions increasingly shape the development of contested space in emerging urban art districts. This calls for more scholarship on the roles of individuals and affinity groups as agents for cultural authenticity. Findings show that power imbalances are present between government and artists, fragmenting the cultural agenda. This study has implications for policies aiming to protect cultural authenticity amidst economic growth pressures.
