The period during which Phnom Penh embarked on its second birth has been an historic one for Asia. Unprecedented economic growth, global trade, poverty alleviation, and social transformation have reached nearly every corner of the region, from Indonesia to Korea. Phnom Penh’s shortcomings notwithstanding, a slow re-emergence can have benefits, principal among them the preservation of cultural authenticity. The city has avoided being carved up by the type of “5-star” commercial and residential development common in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila.
